Set a Live Photo as your iPhone wallpaper
A Live Photo can turn the lock screen into a moving memory. It is a few taps on iOS 16 or later — and a system rule you cannot override when it refuses.
How to set it
- Open the Live Photo in Photos and confirm it plays when you press and hold.
- Lock the iPhone, then press and hold the lock screen and tap Customize.
- Choose Photos and select the Live Photo.
- Tap the Live Photo button (the three small circles at the bottom right), then Set as Wallpaper Pair.
Why the Live Photo button is missing or refuses
Whether a Live Photo can become a wallpaper is decided by iOS, not by the app that made it. The system looks at the amount and type of motion in the clip, and it will silently skip options that do not qualify.
This is not a corrupted file. The same Live Photo still plays normally in Photos. Some photos taken by the iPhone camera itself cannot be set either, so a refusal does not mean the Live Photo is broken.
What tends to work better
- Real, continuous motion. Water, leaves, traffic, a pet moving — the system needs something to animate.
- Motion across the frame. A clip where only the center moves slightly is less likely to be offered.
- A longer motion track. A Live Photo with a healthy three seconds is more usable than a very short one.
- Generated motion works the same way. A Live Photo from Live.AI is a normal Live Photo; try it and let the system decide.
It will only animate on the lock screen
Since iOS 16, Live Photos animate on the lock screen only. The home screen shows a still image. This is a change in iOS itself — earlier versions behaved differently, and no app can bring the home-screen animation back.
If it still will not set
- Try another Live Photo to confirm the gesture and the iOS version are right.
- Restart the iPhone and try again; wallpaper selection sometimes keeps a stale cache.
- Make sure iOS is reasonably up to date.
- Accept that some Live Photos simply are not eligible. Converting them to video or GIF does not help — those cannot be wallpapers either.
Questions
Which iOS version do I need?
iOS 16 or later for Live Photo lock-screen wallpapers. The option does not exist on older versions.
Why does the Live Photo button not appear?
iOS decides eligibility from the motion in the clip. Some Live Photos, including camera originals, cannot be used. The file itself is still fine.
Can a Live Photo made by Live.AI be a wallpaper?
It can be tried like any other Live Photo. The final decision is iOS’s, so no app can guarantee it.
Does it work on the home screen?
No. Since iOS 16, Live Photos animate only on the lock screen.
Does it drain the battery?
The animation plays only while the lock screen is held, not continuously. In practice the effect on battery is small.
Can I use a video as a wallpaper instead?
Not on iPhone. iOS wallpapers are photos and Live Photos; a video file has no wallpaper path.
